The Watts Basketball Philosophy

As we evaluate the athlete of today, we have been able to identify the emphasis and focal point(s), which have been the foundation of their development, as it is displayed on the basketball court. In this, we believe the balance ratio of training, to playing to competing is off.

"Athletes now play too much and don’t compete enough.
They’re over-coached and under-experienced.”

-Donald Watts-

Most today only possess a twin-set of core essentials they have been fortunate to exploit to their advantage. However, we know to truly have a foundation and springboard of success in the game, one has to know and understand the ‘Rules of Engagement’. Basketball success is not just a mass possession of 1+1 skills addition alone; it is a layer-upon-layer tier methodology, in concert, which produces results. It’s all about multiplication.

We believe the game consists of three core essential factors that provide the basis for success. These factors, in-combination, are what the great players of the game possess. Although, on occasion, we have seen this combination displayed through rare individuals early on; we know the mass audience of players never come to understand the dynamics of what these elements together can produce. These are the ‘Mental – Physical – Technical’ (MPT) aspects of the game.

A competitive athlete needs to play with the desire to win, to prepare for the game and have a determination to overcome. They are built for adversity. We are aware that the disregard of one or more of these factors in equation, in the game or in life, will amount to zero, nullifying all other components. Because we understand this concept, we challenge them not to confine themselves to false ideologies or limitations.

We use the basketball court as a stage, vehicle and environment to condition their growth, as athletes and citizens. We impart the skills, to not only ensure success on the court, but also transform their effectiveness in life as a whole. We assist in the understanding and development of their full potential. We provide world-class basketball training defining excellence in athletes. Therefore, we expect our athletes to give no less than their best.

The game of basketball is made up of changes in speed and direction, agility, vertical jumps, the intricacies of teamwork and purpose within a team structure. It is psychological, social, physical, technical and tactical. Here you will learn the layers of the game that create a champion; the quality of the athlete’s game, the discipline of the mind, the strength and coordination of the body, while nurturing the natural athletic ability and creativity.

Our goal is for our athletes to understand the discipline not as a term, but as a practice; to understand confidence not as a thought, but as a way of being. In all, to develop the mindset to not just think they are, but to know they are.

“In consistency lies the power.”
